Renewable Energy Developments

Shenval Micro-Hydro

The Forestry Commission is committed to helping the Scottish Government achieve its renewables objectives, setting a target to install 2GW of renewable energy capacity on the National Forest Estate by 2020 – primarily from wind and hydro power. They are working towards it in partnership with a wide range of commercial organisations and community groups.

One such scheme is a run of river micro hydro scheme on Allt Seanabhaile (Shenval) burn, which lies within the FCS Estate just south of Shenval, Glen Urquhart. The scheme will have a maximum electrical output of 500kW and Green Highland Renewables Ltd has been employed by the landowner to undertake all survey work on their behalf in order to support the application for planning permission, right through to construction. Planning permission was granted late 2014 and construction is hoped to start in summer/autumn 2016.

Soirbheas has the opportunity to invest in the Shenval Hydro project, the money generated from this investment will allow Soirbheas to develop a new Apprenticeship Grant Scheme for people aged 18 – 25 years. The scheme will also supporting local business’ growth by developing skilled staff as well as encourage young people to stay in the area.
